Asian Games:
The Art of Contest

Throughout history, games have been played by everyone: kings and commoners, men and women, young and old. In traditional societies, game sets and paraphernalia were treasured possessions and status symbols, reflecting the cultural aspirations of their owners.

Images of games and game playing pervade literature and the visual arts. Using the paraphernalia of games and depictions of game playing in paintings, prints and decorative arts, Asian Games: The Art of Contest explores the role of games as social and cultural activities in the diverse societies of pre-modern Asia. Highlighting the prominence of Asia as the source of many familiar games (e.g. chess, backgammon, Parcheesi, playing cards) and showing their transmission to the West, this exhibition addresses important themes in Asian culture while illuminating new and unfamiliar aspects of our own culture.
