Heroes of the Sky: Adventures in Early Flight

Heroes of the Sky: Adventures in Early Flight, 1903-1939 celebrates the 100th anniversary of flight through stories of fliers, businessmen, and inventors from the first forty years of aviation.

Six areas honor the men and women who shaped the skies with their minds, hearts, and lives. First Flight presents the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk, leading to their first successful flight in 1903. In Entrepreneurs, risk takers like Henry Ford and Donald Douglas transport mail and people in the first airborne business ventures. Inventors examines stories of influential tinkerers and testers like Sikorsky's groundbreaking invention of the single-rotor helicopter. Barnstormers presents daring young men and women who flew crazy stunts at county fairs, in the movies, and over towns across the country. In Explorers, Admiral Richard Byrd attempts to reach the North Pole by plane. Finally, legendary pilots such as Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart stretch records and imaginations in Record Breakers.
